Choosing hardwood flooring from a small sample chip is one of the hardest decisions homeowners face. Here is how we help Austin clients select the right tone, species, and finish for every room.

The three wide-plank oak samples in the photo above represent the most common decision point in any hardwood flooring project: light, medium, or dark? These are Selva Flooring samples — white oak on the left, honey oak in the center, and dark walnut-stained oak on the right — and they illustrate the full range of what a single species can look like with different stains and finishes. The difference between choosing the wrong tone and the right one is the difference between a floor that makes your home feel warm and grounded and one that fights with your furniture, your walls, and your light.
Austin homes have a specific light quality — strong southern sun, warm afternoon light, and long summer days. This light affects how hardwood tones read in a space. Light floors (white oak, natural, wire-brushed) reflect Austin's abundant light and make rooms feel larger and more open. They show dust and pet hair more readily but hide scratches better than dark floors. Dark floors (walnut, espresso, dark stain) absorb light and create a dramatic, grounded feeling — beautiful in rooms with high ceilings and large windows, but potentially heavy in smaller rooms with limited natural light. Medium tones (honey oak, warm natural) are the most versatile and the most popular choice for Austin homes.
We never ask homeowners to make a flooring decision in a showroom under fluorescent lights. We bring full-size sample boards — typically 12x24 inches — to your home and lay them on the floor in the actual rooms where the flooring will be installed. We place them in morning light, afternoon light, and evening light. We put them next to your existing furniture, your wall paint, and your cabinet colors. We leave them with you for 24–48 hours so you can live with the options before deciding. This process eliminates the most common regret in flooring projects: choosing a tone that looked perfect in the showroom but feels wrong in the actual space.
Wide-plank hardwood (5 inches and above) has become the dominant choice in Austin's luxury market, and for good reason. Wider planks show more of the wood's natural grain and figure, which makes the floor look more premium and less like a commodity product. They also make rooms feel larger by reducing the number of seams visible across the floor. Narrow plank (2.25–3.25 inches) has a more traditional, classic look that works well in older Austin homes and craftsman-style architecture. For most modern Austin homes — especially those with open floor plans — we recommend 5-inch or wider planks in white oak or European oak.
