After 15+ years installing floors across Austin, we've seen the same mistakes over and over. Here's how to avoid the ones that cost homeowners the most time and money.

Solid hardwood is beautiful, but Austin's climate — hot summers, occasional freezes, and humidity swings — is genuinely challenging for it. Solid hardwood expands and contracts with humidity changes. In Austin, this means gapping in winter (when heating dries the air) and potential cupping in summer (when humidity spikes). The solution: choose engineered hardwood for Austin installations, or ensure your home maintains consistent humidity (35–55%) year-round.
The most expensive flooring mistake we see is skipping subfloor preparation to save money upfront. LVP requires a subfloor flat to 3/16" over 10 feet. Tile requires a subfloor flat to 1/8" over 10 feet. Installing over an uneven subfloor causes planks to flex, joints to open, and tiles to crack — often within the first year.

Gray floors were everywhere in Austin from 2015 to 2022. Now we're replacing them. Cool gray LVP and tile felt modern and fresh when it was installed — but it's already feeling dated, and homeowners who chose it are now spending money to update floors that are only 5–7 years old. The lesson: choose warm, neutral tones that have staying power.
